Folk singer and songwriter, Oscar Brand, dies at 96

TRO is saddened to announce the passing of folk singer, writer, radio host and longtime friend, Oscar Brand.

 

In a career spanning several decades, Oscar’s radio show “Folksong Festival” aired for 70 years, which earned him and the program a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-running radio show with the same host.

 

As a performer, he released nearly 100 albums, many filled with an array of songs including campaign songs, children’s songs, drinking songs and protest songs.

 

As a composer, Doris Day’s version of his song “A Guy Is A Guy” reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1952. His Canadian anthem “Something To Sing About” became well known throughout Canada from the early ‘60s to this day.

 

In addition to performing and recording, Mr. Brand wrote books, articles and scores for Broadway musicals and documentary films.

 

Services will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 2pm in Great Neck, NY.
