The year was nineteen hundred, ‘tis worth remembering,
The men who lived through fifty-five days at Peking.
‘Twas called the Boxer Insurrection, a bloody Oriental war
Against all nations of the diplomatic corps.
The flags of France and Britain, how they fluttered in the breeze,
The Italians and the Russians and the flag of the Japanese.
Then like an illustration in the Sunday magazines,
You could see the stars and stripes of the United States marines
Then came the sound of bugles, the rolling drums of doom,
And the streets of Peking were as empty as a tomb.
The empress of all China gave the royal order for
A consultation with her ministers of war.
In a voice of terrifying calmness she gave the signal to begin
Let the foreign devils be driven from Peking.
They storm’d the French Legation, they attacked with shot and shell,
And they came in blood red blouses screaming, “Shashoa” as they fell.
Eleven foreign nations stood united side by side,
And they fought ten thousand Boxers with courage born of pride.
The drums have long ago been muffled, the bugles have a rusty ring,
But down the ages you can hear them echoing
Fifty -five days at Peking,
Fifty- five, fifty-five, fifty-five,
Fifty-five days at Peking!VIEW COMPLETE FEWER LYRICS
