Oh don’t you remember sweet Betsy from Pike,
Who crossed the big mountains with her lover Ike,
With two yoke of oxen and one spotted hog,
And a tall Shanghai rooster and an old yellow dog.
The Shanghai ran off and the cattle all died,
The last piece of bacon that morning was fried,
Poor Ike got discouraged and Betsy got mad,
The dog wagged his tail and looked wonderfully sad.
‘Twas out on the desert where Betsy gave out,
Down on the sand she lay rolling about,
Old Ike looked at Betsy and said with surprise,
“Darling, get up, you’ll get sand in your eyes.”
They swam the wide rivers and crossed the tall peaks,
And camped on the desert for weeks upon weeks,
Through starving and freezing and Indian slaughter,
They reached California through hell and high water.
Well, Old Ike and sweet Betsy got married, of course,
But Ike getting jealous obtained a divorce,
And Betsy well satisfied, said with a shout,
“Goodbye, you old lummox, I’m glad you backed out.”
