Like a shrewd detective on investigation
Who goes after clues and follows each one through,
I search through my brain to find inspiration.
I rifle my breath to find a word or two;
I collar the world while building up the meter,
Handcuffing each phrase as I go along.
With the third degree I make the meter neater;
I do this just to write a song.
Next I’m like a mobster used to force and danger.
When I strike a chord, my poor piano cries.
I beat out the tempo like a cruel arranger,
Choking off a note till its echo dies.
When I find a melody that I can’t mow down,
Sticking to its guns loud and clear and strong,
Then I drag the harmony in for a showdown.
I do this just to try to write a song.
Like a public prosecutor in a fury,
I fiercely attack my work in open court.
As defense attorney I must sway the jury,
And pleading the verse and chorus,
I exhort when the verdict’s in;
If Judgment’s not miscarried
And the law decides that they each belong,
Then the words and music leave the courtroom married,
And all this just to write a single song.VIEW COMPLETE FEWER LYRICS
