Surprise! “Purple and Yellow (ft. Flamy Grant)” is out now on Bandcamp and will premiere SUN 2/8 on SiriusXM “The Village” at 10pm ET!
“Purple and Yellow” was inspired by Braiding Sweetgrass. In the book, Kimmerer recalls asking her botany professor why purple and yellow flowers so often grow together. He dismissed her question as an unserious scientific inquiry that belonged in art school, not the hard sciences. Years later, Kimmerer proved him wrong by discovering the rigorous scientific basis for their coexistence: these complementary colors actually help both species survive, reproduce, and ward off predators. Their reciprocal beauty is a functional expression of their willingness to show up for one another. At a time when the most vulnerable among us are under attack, this song is a love letter to the brave community members among us willing to stand up and protect our neighbors with direct action instead of waiting for permission from systems that weren’t built for us in the first place. This acoustic version features the artist and activist Flamy Grant on vocals, whose vibrant inner beauty embodies the spirit of the song.
